Grove City comeback falls short

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team nearly erased an 11-point deficit in the final three minutes Wednesday night but the Wolverines dropped a 72-67 decision at Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division play at David V. Wise Center.

Allegheny took a 69-58 lead with 2:37 remaining when Eyra Co drained two free throws. Grove City answered with a 9-0 run, which started with a layup by sophomore forward Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run). Senior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) followed with a jumper in the paint, cutting the margin to 69-62.

Senior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) hit two free throws with 46 seconds left. After a steal by junior guard Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars), Hudson buried a three-pointer with 33 seconds left.

Allegheny sewed up the win by going 3 of 4 at the line in the final half-minute, however.

Sherrerd led the Wolverines with a season-high 22 points. The 22 points are the most by a Grove City player this season. Hudson added 15 points while junior guard Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) tossed in a season-high 11 points.

Grove City trailed 22-14 after one quarter, then faced a 40-25 deficit at halftime. Grove City opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run. Hudson recorded a three-pointer and a layup while Sherred added a pair of field goals during the comeback. Allegheny extended its lead to 59-47 by the end of the third period, however.

Grove City shot 43 percent (26 of 61) from the field while Allegheny went 30 of 67 (45 percent) from the floor. The Gators went 7 of 13 on three-pointers, including a 6-for-6 effort to start the game. Grove City went 3 of 15 from behind the three-point line.

Sherrerd collected seven rebounds. Allegheny owned a 39-30 rebound edge. Grove City finished with a season-low eight turnovers. Allegheny had 12 turnovers.
