Grove City drops road tilt

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 65-57 decision Wednesday night at Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference North Division action at David V. Wise Center. 

Senior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) paced Grove City (5-9, 2-3) with 17 points while junior center Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) added 11 points.

Grove City trailed 20-8 in the first half before surging ahead with a 14-0 run. Randle sparked the comeback with a jumper at the 12:00 mark. Junior center Owen Wolf (South Lyon, Mich./H.E.A. Firebirds) and senior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) both scored in the paint to cut Allegheny's lead to 20-14. 

Sophomore guard Anderson Skelton (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) cut the lead to 20-16 with a tip-in while Johncour followed with a dunk. Christenson tied the game with a fast-break layup while Johncour gave Grove City the lead with a layup. Grove City held Allegheny scoreless for 10 minutes during that stretch.

Allegheny closed the first half on a 5-0 spurt, though, and led 25-22 at the intermission. Grove City took a 30-27 lead on a Randle three-pointer with 17 minutes left. Allegheny answered with a 13-2 run to reclaim the lead for good.

Grove City finished 25 of 67 (37 percent) from the field. Allegheny shot 42 percent (22 of 53). Grove City out-rebounded the Gators, 38-33. Johncour grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while Randle had six rebounds.

Each team finished with 11 turnovers. Christenson finished with three assists. 

Ryan Lang led Allegheny with 16 points. 

The teams will meet February 11 in Grove City.

Grove City visits Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference interdivisional play Saturday at 2 p.m.
