Grove City wins tourney opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman pitcher Dash Lanzilotta (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings Wednesday afternoon while the Grove City College offense churned out 14 hits as the Wolverines downed Saint Vincent in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Ross Memorial Park, 10-3.

Lanzilotta (4-4) struck out five men and did not walk a batter while matching a season high with seven innings pitched.

Senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) doubled twice while going 3 for 4. Minnich, who recently became Grove City's all-time leader in runs batted in, drove in three runs and now has 133 in his career.

Senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) also went 3 for 4. He now has 201 career hits and is the first Grove City player to surpass the 200-hit mark in a career.

Junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), sophomore third baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) and freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) all had two hits. Sampson also scored four times.

Minnich's run-scoring single and Vittone's two-run hit gave Grove City a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The lead swelled to 5-1 in the second inning when Minnich doubled in Marinpetro and Sampson. Marinpetro singled in Sampson in the fourth inning while Bevin came home on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Grove City sewed up the win with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bevin scored on a wild pitch, Meredith singled in Sampson and sophomore pinch runner Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian) came in on Marinpetro's sacrifice fly.

Junior Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Sophomore Michael Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) pitched the ninth.

Second-seeded Grove City (28-10) will now face No. 3 Allegheny at 6 p.m. Thursday in a winner's bracket game.
