Grove City takes two from Gators

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team handed visiting Allegheny (15-10, 8-2) its first two Presidents' Athletic Conference defeats by sweeping a conference doubleheader Wednesday at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City (16-9, 7-3) won the opener, 8-6, then scored 13 runs in the sixth inning of Game Two on the way to a 16-5 triumph. Game Two ended in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.

Junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) helped pace Grove City's 12-hit attack in the opener by going 4 for 5. Junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added three hits while senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each had two singles.

Grove City trailed 5-4 in the third inning but reclaimed the lead when freshman DH Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) walked with the bases loaded and freshman left fielder Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) drove in Meredith on a force play.

Meredith's fielder's choice scored Sampson in the sixth inning while a subsequent throwing error brought home Marinpetro.

Allegheny scored once and had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning. However, junior relief pitcher Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) worked out of the jam, then faced the minimum three batters in the ninth to record his first collegiate save.

Lavrich preserved the win for senior David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler). Leslie (6-1) pitched 7 2/3 innings and struck out eight men. He allowed eight hits and walked four.

In Game Two, Grove City trailed 4-3 in the sixth inning but sent 16 batters to the plate to break open the game. Junior pinch hitter Andrew Seest (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) tied the game by singling in Meredith. Senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error while Sampson and Marinpetro followed with back-to-back two-run doubles.

Marinpetro scored on a balk while Vittone singled in Meredith and Minnich to give the Wolverines a 12-4 lead. Durbin then singled in Vittone. Sophomore catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) doubled home sophomore pinch runner Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian), then scored on a two-run homer by sophomore third baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County).

Marinpetro, Meredith, Minnich and Vittone all finished with two hits each.

Sophomore pitcher Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) threw a complete game to earn the win. Trischler (3-1) allowed four earned runs and five hits in seven innings. He struck out four.

Grove City will host Franciscan in a conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
