Another sweep for Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned its second doubleheader sweep of the week Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines took both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference twinbill from visiting Franciscan at Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City rallied for a 13-11 win in Game One, then captured an 11-1 victory in the second game. The second game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Grove City trailed 10-7 with two outs and no runners on base in the bottom of the eighth before charging ahead. Junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) tied the game with a bases-loaded triple that scored sophomore catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), sophomore third baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) and junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township).

Weber ignited the comeback with a two-out single while Bevin and Sampson also singled in succession.

Marinpetro scored the go-ahead run on a double by senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Minnich scored Grove City's fifth run of the winning when he came home on a single by freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled in Meredith, capping the rally.

Sophomore DH Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) gave Grove City a 4-0 lead in the first inning as his two-run double scored Meredith and Minnich. Luko also doubled in Vittone in the sixth inning and then scored on a pinch-hit single from freshman Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley).

Minnich led Grove City's 21-hit attack by going 4 for 5. Marinpetro went 3 for 5 with four runs batted in and a pair of doubles. Meredith finished with three hits. Sampson doubled and singled while Bevin and Vittone finished 2 for 5. Weber singled twice.

Junior pitcher Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) struck out six in five innings. He allowed three runs. Freshman Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) pitched an inning of relief while winning pitcher David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) struck out two in two innings. The sophomore left-hander is 1-0 this year.

Sophomore Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) allowed an unearned run in the ninth to secure the save. Houston became the seventh different Grove City pitcher with a save in 2025.

Freshman pitcher Dash Lanzilotta (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) struck out 11 men in the nightcap to earn his first collegiate win. Lanzilotta allowed one run and three hits in a career-best seven innings.

Minnich's three-run double in the bottom of the first gave Grove City (18-9, 9-3) a 3-1 lead. Minnich scored on Vittone's squeeze bunt while Luko later doubled in freshman DH John McIntyre (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).

Meredith singled in Marinpetro in the second to give Grove City a 6-1 lead. Bevin launched a two-run home run in the third. McIntyre's bases-loaded walk forced home Marinpetro in the fourth inning. Marinpetro singled home Bevin in the bottom of the fifth inning while Vittone scored on an error in the sixth inning.

Marinpetro, McIntyre and Sampson all doubled in Game Two. Bevin finished 2 for 3 while Marinpetro went 2 for 2. Meredith singled twice.

Grove City will host Hiram in a single non-conference game Monday at 4 p.m.
