Grove City thunders into title game

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team scored 11 goals in the first 13 minutes Wednesday night of its Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game with visiting Westminster on the way to a 26-7 victory at Robert E. Thorn Field. 

The victory vaults top-seeded Grove City (12-7) into Saturday night's championship game. The Wolverines will host second-seeded Chatham, which outlasted No. 3 Saint Vincent in the other semifinal Wednesday night, 10-7.

Junior attack Stewart McClain (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) fired in a career-high seven goals to help pace Grove City. McClain also added three assists as he finished with a career-best 10 points. 

Senior attack Zachary Hougan (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) recorded a nine-point night as he tallied three goals and six assists. Senior attack Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored four times while graduate student midfielder Luke Jayne (Vero Beach, Fla./Saint Edward's) pumped in three goals. 

Graduate student midfielder Noah Goad (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) and sophomore attack Davis Schneider (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton Academy) each scored twice.

Grove City also received goals from senior midfielders Alec Jones (Chesterfield, N.J./Notre Dame) and Trey Zabroski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood), junior defender Sam Stevenson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), sophomore midfielder Tyson Bui (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and freshman attack Tyler Blazek (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman).

Blythe, Jayne, Jones and senior midfielder Kobi Bui (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) all had two assists. Tyson Bui, graduate student faceoff specialist Luke Rios (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek), sophomore attack Sawyer Strong (Westfield, Ind./Westfield), sophomore midfielder Joshua McDermott (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Santa Margarita), sophomore midfielder Evan Curry (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and sophomore midfielder Breck Peacock (Wayne, Ill./Wheaton Academy) also chalked up assists. 

Schneider scored with 1:59 left in the first half to give the Wolverines an 18-0 lead. Grove City led 18-1 at halftime. The Wolverines outshot Westminster, 78-26, including a 43-10 margin in shots on goal.

Graduate student Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) earned the win in goal by making one save in 31 minutes, 41 seconds. Junior Tyler Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) made two saves in 28:19 of second half action.

Rios won all 15 of his faceoffs while junior Colton Lehberg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) won 10 of 11 opportunities.

Sophomore Logan Fox (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) recorded a team-leading eight ground balls while junior midfielder Boden Davidson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian) collected five ground balls. Jones and Lehberg both picked up four ground balls.

Tyson Bui caused two turnovers. Westminster finished the game with 18 turnovers while Grove City had 13 turnovers. 

Grove City will host Chatham at 7 p.m. Saturday in the conference tournament title game at Robert E. Thorn Field. The Wolverines topped Chatham, 17-5, during the regular season April 2 at Thorn Field. The Wolverines are in pursuit of their sixth straight conference title.
