WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference as Washington & Jefferson took both ends of a conference doubleheader Wednesday at Ross Memorial Park. W&J won the opener, 4-3, then picked up a 13-7 win in Game Two. Grove City served as the home team for both games.
Grove City trailed 4-0 in the opener but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) singled in junior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), who previously doubled.
Junior center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) cut the lead to 4-2 when he singled in senior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Vittone then scored on a passed ball.
Marinpetro also singled as part of a 2-for-4 outing.
Sophomore pitcher
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) started and allowed two earned runs in six innings. He struck out four and yielded four hits, but took the setback. Sophomore
Michael Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) allowed a run in the seventh. Sophomore
David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) recorded two outs in the eighth while junior
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He fanned two.
Minnich doubled, singled and drove in three runs in Game Two while Vittone doubled and also knocked in three runs. Their two-run doubles in the fourth inning cut W&J's lead in half after the Presidents had jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Junior DH
Andrew Seest (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Vittone.
Freshman pitcher
Dash Lanzilotta (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) started and pitched three innings. He yielded seven runs, absorbing the defeat. Sophomore
Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) allowed two runs in two innings of relief. Freshman
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) pitched the final four innings, permitting four runs in relief.
The Wolverines have the open date in the conference schedule this weekend. Grove City will host Scranton in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
