DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded its spring trip to the RussMatt Invitational in central Florida with a 7-3 setback Saturday morning to Benedictine (Ill.). Grove City (6-4) finished the eight-game trip with a 5-3 record.
Grove City trailed 3-1 but tied the game with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Junior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) singled in sophomore third baseman
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) in the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Senior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tied the game in the seventh inning with a solo home run to center field. Benedictine reclaimed the lead with three runs in the top half of the eighth inning, however.
Minnich went 2 for 5 as Grove City finished with six hits. Sophomore catcher
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the second inning when his bases-loaded hit batsman forced in freshman left fielder
Caleb Nutter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown).
Freshman pitcher
Dash Lanzilotta (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) started and pitched 2 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs and three hits while fanning two. Sophomore
Wil Peters (Mesa, Ariz./Westwood) allowed one earned run in 4 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Michael Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) pitched the final two innings of relief and took the setback.
Grove City will open its home schedule Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Muskingum at Jack Behringer Field.
