Grove City wins home opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened its 2025 home schedule Tuesday afternoon by rolling to a 19-5 win over Muskingum (10-1) in non-conference action at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City (7-4) jumped out a 4-0 lead in the first inning, added five more runs in the second inning and then broke open the game with a seven-run fourth inning.

The Wolverines pounded out nine extra-base hits in the victory. Freshman DH Caleb Nutter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) went 3 for 6 with a grand slam, two doubles and seven runs batted in. Senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) belted a two-run homer in the first inning while going 2 for 3 while sophomore third baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) homered, singled and knocked in two runs.

Junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) doubled twice while sophomore catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and freshman left fielder Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) also doubled. Weber and Sampson both went 2 for 4 with three runs scored.

Senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) went 1 for 3 with three runs scored.

Nutter's two-run double gave Grove City a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Vittone followed with a home run to left, doubling the lead. Freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) started the second inning scoring by singling in Weber. Meredith later scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny).

Nutter doubled in Sampson later in the second inning and Minnich came home on Vittone's sacrifice fly. Marinpetro and Minnich then both had run-scoring singles in the third.

Nutter's grand slam highlighted the fourth inning. Bevin closed Grove City's scoring with a solo clout in the sixth.

Senior pitcher David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned the win by striking out six men in six innings. Leslie (3-1) allowed two runs and three hits. Freshman Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) pitched two innings of relief while sophomore reliever Ross Morrow (McKean, Pa./General McLane) struck out two men in the ninth.

Grove City will visit Pitt-Greensburg at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in non-conference action.
