HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Six Grove City College women's lacrosse players scored goals Tuesday evening but the Wolverines dropped a 17-10 non-conference decision at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). SCAD-Savannah (4-0) entered the week ranked No. 1 in the NAIA national poll.
Sophomore midfielder
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored three times for Grove City while senior midfielder
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and junior attack
Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) both scored twice.
The Wolverines also received goals from sophomore attacks
Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and
Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), as well as sophomore midfielder
Jess Robinette (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley).
Robinette, Rowell, Shilling, Stevenson and freshman midfielder
Mia Mygatt (Silver Spring, Md./Brookewood) all recorded assists.
Grove City trailed 2-0 early but grabbed a 3-2 lead in the first quarter on goals from Robinette, Stevenson and Blythe in a four-minute span. SCAD-Savannah led 5-4 after one quarter, then scored the first five goals of the second quarter. Rowell's second short-handed goal of the game trimmed the lead to 10-5 with 1:07 left in the half. Neither team scored in the final 67 seconds of the half.
Shilling added six draw controls for Grove City while senior midfielder
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) won five draw controls. Wartman and senior defender
Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) both caused two turnovers.
Grove City finished the game with 27 turnovers while SCAD-Savannah had 20 turnovers. The hosts outshot Grove City, 34-26.
Senior goalie
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) played the first three quarters and made seven saves. Junior
Mia Gallagher (Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) made two saves in the fourth quarter.
Senior defender
Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) led the Wolverines with four ground balls. Stevenson and Wartman each scooped up three ground balls.
Grove City will open its home schedule March 12 against Buffalo State at Don Lyle Field. The game will start at 5 p.m.
