GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by splitting a home doubleheader with Westminster at Jack Behringer Field. Westminster (8-10, 3-1) held off a Grove City rally for an 11-9 win in the opener. The Wolverines rebounded for a 12-4 win in Game Two.
Sophomore third baseman
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) helped lead Grove City in the nightcap by going 4 for 6 with a double. Sophomore DH
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) belted a three-run homer while going 2 for 3 with three runs scored.Â
Junior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) added a double and two runs batted in for the Wolverines, who finished with 10 hits.Â
Luko gave Grove City a 2-1 lead in the second inning by singling in senior second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian). Senior catcher
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) singled in junior center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) while a groundout by freshman shortstop
Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored Luko. Freshman left fielder
Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored on an error on the play.Â
Marinpetro doubled in Bevin in the sixth inning, pushing the lead to 6-3. The lead swelled to 8-3 when Sampson singled in Marinpetro and senior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) came home on a throwing error.
Luko's three-run homer in the sixth inning extended the lead to 11-3. Luko later scored on Bevin's eighth-inning single.
Sophomore pitcher
Bryce Trischler (Mars, Pa./Shady Side Academy) earned the win with 4 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out nine and walked one while yielding one run. Junior
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) made his first start of the season and pitched 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs and six hits.Â
Marinpetro's grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game One cut Westminster's lead to 11-9. In the ninth, Vittone and Sampson both walked, then completed a double steal with one out. However, the Wolverines stranded both men.
Bevin tripled and singled while Marinpetro finished 2 for 4. Sophomore catcher
Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and Meredith also had two hits each.Â
Freshman pitcher
Dash Lanzilotta (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) started for Grove City. He allowed two earned runs in six innings. Lanzilotta struck out five and walked one but took the setback. Junior
Raymond Stierer (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Sophomores
Michael Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and
David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) both pitched in the eighth while freshman
Corey Veverka (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) tossed a scoreless ninth in relief.
Grove City returns to action Saturday at Geneva. The conference doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
