GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team held visiting Washington & Jefferson to 17 total shots Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines earned a 9-5 victory over W&J in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Don Lyle Field.
Sophomore attack
Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) rifled in four goals for Grove City (3-5, 2-0 PAC) while sophomore attack
Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) recorded two goals and assisted a third score.
Grove City also received goals from senior midfielder
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg), sophomore midfielder
Jess Robinette (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) and freshman midfielder
Mia Mygatt (Silver Spring, Md./Brookewood).
Shilling scored twice in the first quarter to give Grove City a 2-1 lead six minutes into the game. W&J's Caleigh Bogats tied the game at the 8:44 mark of the opening quarter but unassisted goals by Robinette and then Blythe put Grove City up 4-2 after one quarter.
The Wolverines led 5-3 at halftime, then carried a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter. In the final period, Shilling scored off a Blythe assist with 8:56 left and Mygatt's power play goal sealed the win with 2:20 remaining. Robinette assisted Mygatt's goal.
Roetering also caused six turnovers as Grove City coerced 24 W&J turnovers. Robinette, senior defender
Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) and senior defender
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) all caused three turnovers.
Shilling and junior attack
Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) both collected four ground balls. Junior defender
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) won four draw controls.
Senior goalie
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned the win by making seven saves.
Grove City outshot W&J, 28-17, including a 17-12 edge in shots on goal. Grove City had 20 turnovers.
The Wolverines will visit Allegheny at 5 p.m. Wednesday in conference action.
