Grove City rolls Cougars in twinbill

MUNHALL, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday by taking both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader from host Chatham at West Field. Grove City won the opener in seven innings, 12-2, then captured a 15-3 Game Two win in eight innings.

Both games ended early due to the conference's 10-run rule.

Junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) helped pace the Wolverines (11-6, 2-0) in the opener by going 4 for 4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.

Senior third baseman Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) went 2 for 4 and knocked in three runs while junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) both tripled.

Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opener as sophomore pitcher Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) singled in Meredith and Marinpetro later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian).

The lead grew to 5-2 in the second as Bevin, Vittone and senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) all walked with the bases loaded. Sampson and Cato later followed with two-run singles that pushed the lead to 9-2.

Cato singled in Sampson in the fourth inning while Sampson drove in Bevin and Minnich with a fifth-inning single.

Bevin threw a five-hitter, allowing no earned runs in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Seven men produced multi-hit games in Game Two as Grove City battered Chatham pitching for 20 hits. Senior catcher Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) helped pace the attack by going 4 for 5 with three runs scored.

Bevin doubled twice while going 3 for 5 with four runs scored. Meredith and Marinpetro both had three hits while Minnich, Vittone and Sampson all singled twice. Sophomore left fielder Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) tripled.

Sampson singled in Vittone to tie the game in the second inning, 1-1. Luko gave Grove City the lead for good when he tripled in Vittone in the fourth inning. Bevin boosted the lead to 4-1 when his double drove home DiStefano and Sampson. Bevin then scored the fourth run of the inning on a Meredith single.

Freshman pinch hitter Kallen Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) drove in Bevin with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning. Vittone gave Grove City a 7-1 lead by driving home Marinpetro.

Meredith and Vittone both had sacrifice flies in Grove City's four-run seventh inning. Junior Andrew Seest (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) closed the scoring in the eighth inning when his groundout scored Meredith.

Senior pitcher David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) secured the win by allowing two runs in seven innings. He struck out six and allowed four hits. Sophomore David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) pitched the eighth and struck out three men. He yielded a run and one hit.

Grove City will host Westminster at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a conference doubleheader.
