GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Five Grove City College pitchers combined for a two-hitter Tuesday afternoon as the Wolverines earned a 4-1 win over visiting Penn State DuBois (3-4) in non-conference baseball action at Jack Behringer Field.
Senior
David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler), sophomore
David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour), junior
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry), sophomore
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) and junior
Raymond Stierer (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) combined to limit the Lions to two hits over nine innings. Lavrich pitched the fifth inning and earned his first collegiate win. Stierer nailed down his first collegiate save by pitching the ninth.
Leslie struck out four men in his two innings on the mound. Gallagher yielded an unearned run in his two innings. Lavrich allowed one hit while striking out two in the fifth. Bevin pitched three perfect innings and fanned four. Stierer allowed a single but ended the game with a double play.Â
Offensively, junior first baseman
Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) doubled twice to pace Grove City's nine-hit attack. Bevin went 2 for 4 and freshman left fielder
Braeden Coyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) added two hits.Â
Bevin tied the game in the bottom of the fourth by singling in Marinpetro. Grove City took the lead in the fifth as sophomore DH
Dan Luko (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by senior catcher
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) and came home on Coyle's two-out infield single.
Grove City added a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Freshman shortstop
Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) singled home junior center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), giving the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. Senior second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) pushed the lead to 4-1 when his single drove in sophomore pinch runner
Caleb Backos (Troy, Mich./Bloomfield Christian).
Grove City used 19 men in the victory.Â
The Wolverines will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play at 2 p.m. Saturday against homestanding Chatham.
