Wolverines pick up road win

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned its second non-conference win in as many days Wednesday afternoon as the Wolverines pulled out a 5-4 victory at Pitt-Greensburg.

Senior third baseman Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) and junior center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) both doubled and singled for the Wolverines while senior second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) went 2 for 3 with three runs scored.

Junior first baseman Colin Marinpetro (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) went 2 for 4 as the Wolverines finished with 11 hits.

Grove City (8-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Sampson scored on a single by senior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley). Cato doubled in Vittone in the fourth inning, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the sixth, sophomore pitcher Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) singled in Vittone and freshman shortstop Sam Meredith (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Vittone closed Grove City's scoring in the eighth by coming home on Cato's sacrifice fly.

Bevin earned the pitching victory by allowing one run in five innings. He struck out four and permitted four hits. Sophomore David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) followed with 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three and allowed one run. Sophomore Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) recorded the final out of the game for his first collegiate save.

Grove City will host Houghton at 1 p.m. Saturday in a non-conference twinbill at Jack Behringer Field.
