Grove City places 18 on All-PAC squads

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team entered 18 swimmers into competition at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, held February 19-22 at the College's James E. Longnecker Pool. All 18 are now All-PAC honorees.

Those 18 men all helped Grove City win its seventh straight conference title as the Wolverines finished the four-day meet with 1,087 team points. 

Twelve of Grove City's 18 honorees achieved First Team All-PAC distinction: junior Nathan Beukema (Kensington, Md./Homeschooled), sophomore Paul Braun (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central), junior Caleb Einolf (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown), sophomore Sam Funches (Tacoma, Wash./Covenant), sophomore Owen Hancock (Brunswick, Ohio/Westside Christian), junior Garrett Hopkins (Medina, Ohio/Homeschooled), sophomore C.J. Mayhew (Gaithersburg, Md./Homeschooled), junior Logan Myers (Middleburg, Fla./Homeschooled), sophomore Bryce Pope (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Valley Classical), junior Will Sterrett (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard), junior Sam Thayer (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and freshman Ryan Turner (Fombell, Pa./Riverside). 

Sophomore Andrew Buxbaum (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), sophomore Charlie Cratty (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe), sophomore Peter Hasse (East Earl, Pa./Homeschooled), sophomore Josh Remlinger (Granville, Ohio/Granville), senior Jacob Vannoy (Coatesville, Pa./Conestoga Christian) and junior Emmett Wilson (Laconia, N.H./Homeschooled) all earned Second Team All-PAC honors. 

Beukema contributed to four relay victories at the conference championships. He, Einolf, Funches and Hancock won the 200 free relay in 1 minute, 22.18 seconds. That foursome also won the 400 free relay in a pool-record time of 3:00.82. 

Beukema, Einolf, Hancock and Pope won the 200 medley relay in 1:29.36. Sterrett then joined Beukema, Einolf and Hancock in winning the 400 medley relay  in pool-record time, 3:17.69.

Beukema also took second in the 200 free (1:44.49) and added third-place finishes in the 50 (20.93) and 100 (45.38) freestyle events. 

Braun, Mayhew, Myers and Turner won the 800 free relay with a time of 7:03.58. Braun also took third in the 200 backstroke (1:57.90) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (54.03). 

Einolf won the 100 breaststroke in a conference- and pool-record time of 53.77 seconds. He finished runner-up in the 50 free (20.33) and 100 free (44.62). His preliminary time of 20.30 seconds in the 50 surpassed the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying standard. 

Funches finished third in the 200 free (1:44.88) and fourth in the 100 free (46.10), along with his two free relay victories. 

Hancock swept the butterfly for Grove City at the conference championships. He posted a winning time of 48.74 seconds in the 100 butterfly, then won the 200 fly in a conference-record time of 1:51.89. Hancock also earned third place in the 50 free with a time of 21.02 seconds. 

Hopkins placed second to Hancock in the 100 fly (52.14) and also reached the finals of the 100 free as he finished eighth in 48.71 seconds. Mayhew captured runner-up in the 400 individual medley (4:09.66) and 1650 (16:51.51) while also taking third in the 500 (4:51.74). 

Myers placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:55.48) and third in the 400 IM (4:10.39). He also secured a fourth-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.96. 

Pope produced a pair of runner-up finishes as he secured second in the 200 IM (1:56.03) and 100 breaststroke (56.05). Pope also captured third place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:09.48. 

Sterrett earned three victories at the conference championships as he won the 200 backstroke and both individual medley races. Sterrett won the 200 back in a time of 1:52.00. His time of 1:51.93 broke the pool and conference record for the 200 individual medley. Sterrett also produced a victorious time of 4:04.72 in the 400 IM. 

Thayer earned second in the 500 free (4:48.97) and added third-place finish in the 1650 (17:00.12). Turner capped his rookie season by winning the 200 free in a time of 1:43.13. He also placed fifth in the 100 free with a time of 47.28 seconds. 

Buxbaum took third in the 200 IM (1:56.99) and fourth place in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.46). Cratty captured sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:01.36) and 200 butterfly (2:03.69) while Hasse took fourth in both the 100 (53.57) and 200 (1:58.15) backstroke events. 

Remlinger captured third in the 200 butterfly (1:58.19) and fourth in the 100 fly (53.03). He finished one spot behind Vannoy in the 100 butterfly, who took third in a time of 52.97 seconds. Vannoy added a seventh-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:01.44). Wilson captured fifth place in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.88) and sixth place in the 100 breaststroke (59.41).

Einolf has qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held March 19-22 in Greensboro, N.C. Einolf will compete in the 100 breaststroke, the 100 butterfly and 100 free at the national championships.
