MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point deficit in the first half Wednesday night to secure a 65-55 victory at Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the David V. Wise Center.
The win clinches Grove City's spot in the season-ending six-team conference tournament. The Wolverines improved to 14-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference.
Senior guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) bombed in five three-pointers as part of a 17-point outing for Grove City. Junior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) also scored 17 points, including 3-for-4 accuracy from behind the three-point line.
Grove City trailed 25-12 midway through the first half but charged back with a 23-7 run. Sophomore center
Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) ignited the comeback with a tip-in and a layup. Three-pointers from Christenson and Bock cut the lead to 25-22.
Allegheny reclaimed a 32-24 lead on an Isaiah Portis layup but Christenson's three-pointer, a tip-in from senior forward
Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and another Bock three-pointer forged a 32-32 tie. Bock's third three-pointer of the half gave Grove City a 35-32 lead but Allegheny guard Ryan Lang tied the game before halftime with a three-pointer.
Lang's three-point play with 13:21 left gave Allegheny a 49-45 lead. The Wolverines then held Allegheny without a field goal for the next 10 minutes as Grove City surged ahead with a 13-1 run.
Sophomore center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) tied the game at 49 with a tip-in while Bock's steal and layup gave Grove City the lead for good, 51-49. Cherry's layup with four minutes left gave Grove City a 58-50 lead.
Christenson and senior forward
John Ward (Indian Land, S.C./Covenant Day, N.C.) both sank two free throws in the final 1:15 to cement the victory.
Grove City converted 25 of 64 (39 percent) field goal attempts. Allegheny went 22 of 55 (40 percent). The Wolverines held Allegheny to 8-for-28 (29 percent) shooting in the second half.
Cherry collected eight rebounds. Johncour and senior guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) both grabbed seven rebounds as Grove City earned a 42-27 edge on the glass.
Cherry and Gump both had four assists while Ward assisted three field goals. The Wolverines had only 10 turnovers while Allegheny committed 12 turnovers.
James Sitter led Allegheny with 14 points.
Grove City will host Thiel at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday in conference play. The Wolverines have the league's open date this Saturday.
