Wolverines bounce Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Last season in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals, eventual conference champion Geneva used a late three-point play to edge the Grove City College men's basketball team, 68-67.

Tuesday night, this year's edition of the Wolverines made sure that there will be a new conference champion in 2025.

The Wolverines led 31-27 at halftime and shot 53 percent (16 of 30) from the field in the second half to secure a 69-61 win over No. 4 seed Geneva (14-12) in the conference tournament quarterfinals at Metheny Field House. Fifth-seeded Grove City (16-10) will now visit top-seeded Chatham in Thursday's semifinals at 7 p.m.

Sophomore center Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) poured in 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting to help pace Grove City while senior guard Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in 14 points. Senior guard Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added 11 for the Wolverines, who led by as many as 17, 60-43, in the second half.

Geneva jumped out to an 11-2 lead but Grove City roared back with a 21-2 run. Cherry sparked the outburst with a tip-in while senior forward John Ward (Indian Land, S.C/Covenant Day, N.C.) followed with a three-pointer. Junior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) scored a fast-break layup while sophomore center Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) followed with a game-tying jumper.

Grove City surged ahead on back-to-back jumpers from junior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity). Bock's back-to-back three-pointers pushed the lead to 21-13 while Yarberough capped the run with a layup.

Yarberough and Bock recorded consecutive three-point plays in the second half to give Grove City its 17-point lead. Geneva closed to within 62-58 with two minutes left but Yarberough and Christenson swished jumpers to ward off Geneva's rally.

Grove City finished the game 29 of 62 (47 percent) from the field. The Wolverines held Geneva to 38 percent (21 of 56) shooting.

Cherry led the Wolverines with eight rebounds. Yarberough snared six rebounds and senior forward Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) added five rebounds. Grove City amassed a 39-32 edge on the glass.

Freshman guard Anderson Skelton (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) recorded three assists. Each team had eight turnovers.

Ryan Rachic led Geneva with 19 points.

Chatham earned the top seed in the conference tournament and a bye to the semifinal round with an 18-2 conference record. Grove City handed Chatham its lone home loss in conference play December 7 when the Wolverines secured a 72-62 victory in Pittsburgh. Chatham won 72-60 at Grove City in the February 1 rematch.
