PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team closed the 2024-25 season Thursday night with a 91-80 setback at top-seeded Chatham in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament semifinals.
Fifth-seeded Grove City (16-11) trailed 22-4 midway through the first half before closing to within two points on a pair of occasions in the second half. However, Chatham did not relinquish the lead.Â
Four Grove City players scored in double figures, led by a 16-point outing from junior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity). Christenson scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half. Senior guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) fired in five three-pointers for a 15-point performance.Â
Sophomore center
Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) posted 13 points while senior guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored all 11 of his points in the second half.Â
A 10-0 run sparked Grove City's comeback in the first half. Junior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) opened the run with a jumper while Cherry added six points during the outburst. Senior forward
Jaxon Weyforth (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) scored a tip-in in the run.Â
Sophomore guard
Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) drained a pair of jumpers while senior forward
John Ward (Indian Land, S.C./Covenant Day, N.C.) buried a three-pointer as Grove City pulled to within 38-31 by halftime.
Bock and Yarberough hit consecutive three-pointers in the second half that cut Chatham's lead to 52-50 with 12 minutes remaining. However, Chatham guard Easton Fulmer hit three-pointers on successive possessions to thwart Grove City's comeback.
Grove City finished the game 11 of 22 from behind the three-point line while Chatham (22-4) made 10 of 22 attempts from three-point territory. Overall, Grove City shot 42 percent (29 of 69) from the floor. Chatham went 27 of 50 (54 percent).
Sophomore center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) collected a team-high seven rebounds for the Wolverines, who held a 39-31 edge on the glass.Â
The Wolverines committed 13 turnovers while Chatham had 10 turnovers. Johncour also had four assists while Christenson and senior forward
Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) both assisted three field goals. Cherry blocked two shots.Â
Simon Boyer led Chatham with 23 points. The Cougars will host No. 3 seed Washington & Jefferson in the title game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. W&J toppled Saint Vincent, 87-79, in Thursday night's other semifinal tilt.
Yarberough concluded his career with 1,215 points, which is tied for eighth in program history. Bock finished his career as Grove City's all-time leader in three-point goals, having made 230 during his four years. He finished with 950 career points.Â
The Wolverines will lose Bock, Gump, Ward, Weyforth, Yarberough, forward
Ben Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and center
Bobby Little (Currituck County, N.C./Currituck County) to graduation.
