Late comeback falls short

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team closed the 2024-25 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 77-73 setback at Saint Vincent (20-5, 16-4) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Carey Center. 

Grove City (15-10, 12-8) trailed by 11 points in the second half after the Bearcats went on a 12-0 run. Grove City countered with a 14-5 run, which junior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) sparked with a three-pointer. 

Senior guard Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in 9 of the next 11 Grove City points, including 4-for-4 accuracy at the foul line. Sophomore guard Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added a jumper during the outburst. 

Junior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) pulled the Wolverines to within 75-73 when he drilled a three-pointer with five seconds left. Dev Ostrowski sewed up the win for Saint Vincent by sinking two free throws, however. 

Christenson led Grove City with 20 points, which included 4-for-5 accuracy from behind the three-point line. Yarberough finished with 18 points and sophomore center Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) tossed in 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Grove City shot 27 of 57 (47 percent) for the game while Saint Vincent hit 26 of 63 (41 percent) field goal attempts. Grove City amassed a 43-31 rebound edge as Christenson and Yarberough both collected eight rebounds. 

Christenson also recorded three assists. Yarberough had four steals. Grove City finished the game with 18 turnovers, which led to 23 Saint Vincent points. The Bearcats turned over the ball six times.

Ostrowski led Saint Vincent with 25 points. 

Grove City will be the No. 5 seed in next week's conference tournament. Grove City will visit No. 4 Geneva (15-11, 12-8) in the quarterfinals Tuesday night. Geneva earned the fourth seed due to tiebreaker.
