GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 64-59 overtime decision Saturday afternoon to defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Chatham (14-6, 12-3) in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (11-9, 9-6) forced overtime when junior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) forged a 57-57 tie by hitting two free throws with 27 seconds left in regulation. Chatham outscored Grove City in the extra session, 7-2, however.Â
Senior guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) fired in a team-leading 11 points for Grove City while senior forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and junior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) both tossed in 10 points.Â
Davinsizer drilled a three-pointer at the end of the first half, pulling the Wolverines into a 28-28 halftime tie. Grove City then opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run, sparked by three-pointers from Davinsizer and sophomore guard
Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland).
Senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and Davinsizer added jumpers during the outburst. Grove City held Chatham without a field goal in the third quarter and held a 43-31 lead after three quarters.Â
Chatham reclaimed the lead with a 17-4 run over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Grove City tied Chatham four times down the stretch, eventually sending the game to overtime.
Grove City finished the game 25 of 64 (39 percent) from the field while Chatham hit 21 of 77 (27 percent) field goal attempts. Chatham held a 50-47 edge in rebounds. Polczynski led Grove City with nine rebounds while Hannon collected eight rebounds. Sherrerd captured seven rebounds and Hasley had six boards.Â
Polczynski dished out a season-high 10 assists. Senior guard
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) recorded five assists and Hasley had four assists. Grove City recorded assists on 23 of its 25 field goals.Â
Hasley also had three steals. Davinsizer and Sherrerd both blocked two shots.Â
Grove City turned over the ball 26 times while Chatham had 14 turnovers. The game featured 14 ties and 15 lead changes.Â
Hannah Chenault led Chatham with 19 points.
Grove City will visit Allegheny at 6 p.m. Wednesday in conference play.
