Big road win for Wolverines

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Senior guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) fired in a career-high 19 points while junior centers Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) and Emma Ulmer (Milton, Pa./Northumberland Christian) tossed in 16 and 12 points, respectively, Wednesday night as the Grove City College women's basketball team earned a 77-68 win at Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the David V. Wise Center. 

Grove City (12-9, 10-6) shot 21 of 36 (58 percent) from the field in the first half as the Wolverines bolted to a 48-33 halftime lead. Allegheny (13-7, 12-3) cut the lead to 60-48 by the end of the third quarter and closed to within 69-65 with a minute left. 

However, Polczynski went 5 of 6 at the foul line and senior guard Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) hit two free throws down the stretch to sew up the victory. 

Grove City closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes of the period. Layups by Ulmer and Polczynski sparked the run while Sherrerd's putback gave Grove City a 19-11 lead. Polczynski and Sherrerd both scored in the paint in the final minute to give Grove City a 23-13 lead after 10 minutes.

Polczynski scored Grove City's final seven points of the first half as the Wolverines took their largest lead of the game, 48-29, in the second quarter.

The Wolverines shot 29 of 64 (45 percent) from the field for the game while Allegheny shot 25 of 66 (38 percent). Sherrerd collected nine rebounds to help Grove CIty attain a 44-35 edge on the glass. Senior forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) added eight rebounds while Polczynski snagged seven rebounds. 

Grove City turned over the ball 14 times. Allegheny committed 13 turnovers. Polczynski recorded three assists while senior guard Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) tallied three steals. 

Hannon finished with eight points while Davinsizer scored seven points in Grove City's balanced offensive attack. 

Bella Antonacci led Allegheny with 19 points. The Gators earned a 65-60 win January 6 at Grove City. 

The Wolverines will have the open date in the conference schedule Saturday. Grove City will host Thiel at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the Grove City College Arena.
