Wolverines win conference opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) poured in 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting Wednesday night while senior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) added 18 points to help the Grove City College women's basketball team capture a 79-63 victory over visiting Geneva in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at the Grove City College Arena. 

Grove City (5-2, 1-0) led 43-32 at halftime but Geneva (1-4, 0-1) rallied to forge a 50-50 tie. However, Sherrerd's jumper in the paint with two minutes left in the third quarter sparked an 8-2 run. Junior forward Brooke McCoy (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield) followed with two free throws and a layup while Hasley's two foul shots put Grove City ahead 58-52 after 30 minutes. 

In the fourth quarter, senior center Emma Ulmer (Northumberland, Pa./Northumberland Christian) scored twice from the field, Hasley scored on a fast break and junior guard Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) burined a three-pointer to give Grove City a double-digit lead, 70-59.

Sophomore forward Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) gave Grove City its largest lead, 77-61, with a three-pointer. 

Grove City went 8 of 16 (50 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter. Geneva shot 4 of 15 (27 percent) over the final 10 minutes. For the game, Grove City shot 44 percent (27 of 61) from the field. Geneva went 24 of 76 (32 percent). 

The Wolverines amassed a 52-41 rebound advantage. Ulmer snagged 10 rebounds while Sherrerd had nine rebounds. Hasley added seven boards. 

Hasley also had five steals. Grove City forced 17 Geneva turnovers. The Wolverines turned over the ball 18 times. Ulmer recorded four assists and Hasley had three assists. 

Grove City also closed the second quarter on an 8-2 run over the final minute of the period. Junior guard Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started the flurry with two free throws while Sherrerd and Hudson both scored in the paint. Sherrerd then drained a 22-footer as time expired to give Grove City its 11-point halftime lead.

Emily Garvin led Geneva with 18 points. Geneva led 17-15 after the first quarter. 

Grove City will visit Hiram at 1 p.m. Saturday in conference play.
