Grove City clipped in conference opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday night by dropping a 64-52 verdict to visiting Geneva in the Grove City College Arena. 

Senior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) paced Grove City with 12 points while senior guard Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) added 10 points. 

Geneva led 36-27 at halftime and then extended its lead to 44-29 three minutes into the second half. The Wolverines countered with a 15-4 run, however, that Christenson and junior forward Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) capped with consecutive three-pointers.

Junior guard Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) cut Geneva's lead to 56-52 with a three-pointer with three minutes left. However, the Wolverines misfired on their final five possessions.

Grove City shot 33 percent (19 of 57) on field goal attempts. Geneva finished the game 22 of 64 (34 percent). Both teams went 8 for 29 (28 percent) in the second half.

Grove City amassed a 46-37 edge in rebounds. Junior center Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) had seven rebounds while Christenson, Randle and junior center Owen Wolf (South Lyon, Mich./Firebirds H.E.A.) each had six caroms. 

Sophomore guard Mike Vaughn (Oakdale, Pa./Bishop Canevin) and sophomore forward Liam Conklin (Enfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) both had three assists. Johncour blocked two shots. 

Grove City finished with 15 turnovers. Geneva committed five turnovers. 

Jonathan Bertovich led Geneva with 17 points. 

The Wolverines will visit Hiram at 3 p.m. Saturday in conference action.
