6th straight secures Sunshine State sweep Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team never trailed Saturday night as the Wolverines earned a 70-43 victory over Regis in non-conference action at the Ocean Center. The win is Grove City's second in as many days in Florida and it is also the Wolverines' sixth consecutive overall victory.

Grove City (8-2) jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Senior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) scored twice in the paint and senior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) deposited consecutive field goals during the first three minutes of the game to help ignite the run. Sophomore forward Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) drilled a three-pointer while junior guard Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) capped the outburst with a layup.

The lead swelled to 18-3 when junior guard Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) drained a three-pointer with 2:34 left in the first quarter.

Regis (3-8) whittled the lead to 22-13 by the end of the first quarter. Grove City led 37-26 at halftime and carried a 52-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

Hasley led Grove City's balanced offensive attack with 12 points while Sherrerd finished with 10 points. Both players went 5 for 8 from the field. Junior forward Brooke McCoy (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield) tossed in nine points while Hudson and McDole each finished with eight points.

Grove City finished 29 of 72 (40 percent) from the field while holding Regis to a 15-of-57 (26 percent) shooting performance. The Wolverines also earned a 45-44 rebound edge. Hudson led Grove City with nine rebounds while McCoy and junior forward Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) each collected seven rebounds.

McDole recorded three assists. Hasley tallied six steals as Grove City forced 27 Regis turnovers. Grove City turned over the ball 18 times.

Madi Zancan led Regis with 17 points.

Grove City began its Florida trip Friday with a 61-60 win over Widener. At 8-2, Grove City is off to its best start since the 2019-20 season, when the Wolverines won 9 of their first 10 games. Grove City also went 8-2 in the COVID-abbreviated 2021 season.

The Wolverines open 2026 by visiting Juniata in non-conference action Saturday, January 3 at 3 p.m.
