Semifinal sweep for Wolverines

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's volleyball team earned a trip to the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament title match by sweeping North Division runner-up Thiel, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19, in the semifinal round Thursday night at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.

Grove City, the No. 4 seed out of the conference's North Division, advances to Saturday's championship match. The Wolverines will visit North Division top seed Hiram in the final round. Hiram rallied for a 25-15, 15-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-12 home win over Westminster in the other semifinal Thursday night.

Sophomore libero Lilly Wojtala (Copley, Ohio/Revere) matched a season high by serving five aces, complementing a balanced offensive attack. Junior Sarah Hart (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) paced the Wolverines (19-7) with eight kills while junior Kendra Klusch (Alliance, Ohio/Homeschooled) chalked up six kills.

Senior Lila Stonehouse (Hatboro, Pa./Abington) and sophomore Lilly Pool (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) both had five kills. Sophomore setter Brooke Manfull (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) recorded a team-leading 16 assists and junior Sarah Harris (Lebanon, Ohio/Mars Hill) added 11 assists.

Klusch led Grove City's defensive effort with eight total blocks. Junior Alayna Dorst (Middletown, Del./Middletown) had four blocks. Pool and junior Lily Lagaras (Crofton, Md./Crofton) both totaled three blocks.

Wojtala collected a team-leading 17 digs. Senior Bella Costa (Newbury, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) recorded 14 digs and Dorst contributed 10 digs.

Grove City also swept Thiel during the regular season October 22 in Greenville. The road team has won six straight matches in the series and 10 of the last 11 meetings.

The North Division went 4-0 against the PAC's South Division in the quarterfinals Tuesday night, setting up Thursday's all-North Division semifinal round.

Hiram won both regular season meetings with Grove City this fall. Hiram won at home September 16 in the conference opener, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 27-25. The teams then met November 5 in Grove City, with Hiram (26-2) pulling out a 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12 victory.

Grove City last reached the conference tournament finals during the spring 2021 COVID season. Prior to that, the Wolverines last reached the championship round in 2002. Hiram seeks its first PAC title in women's volleyball.
