HIRAM, Ohio -- Entering this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the Grove City College women's volleyball team needed to win three matches, all on the road, to capture their first conference title in 24 years.
Mission accomplished!
Saturday night, the Wolverines (20-8) earned their third road win in five nights by upsetting top-seeded Hiram, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 in the tournament championship match at Price Gymnasium. It is the Wolverines' 10th all-time Presidents' Athletic Conference title in women's volleyball, the most in conference history.
Grove City also earned its sixth all-time NCAA Division III Tournament berth with Saturday night's win. It will be Grove City's first trip to the national tournament since 1986.
Junior
Alayna Dorst (Middletown, Del./Middletown), the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, led Grove City with 10 kills while junior
Sarah Hart (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) recorded nine kills. Senior
Lila Stonehouse (Hatboro, Pa./Abington) added eight kills.
Sophomore setter
Brooke Manfull (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) recorded 14 assists and junior
Sarah Harris (Lebanon, Ohio/Mars Hill) contributed 13 assists.
Defensively, junior
Kendra Klusch (Alliance, Ohio/Homeschooled) led the Wolverines with five blocks. Stonehouse and junior
Lily Lagaras (Crofton, Md./Crofton) both had three blocks while Dorst and sophomore
Lilly Pool (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) each had two blocks.
Dorst also had 18 digs while Harris tallied 16 digs. Sophomore
Lilly Wojtala (Copley, Ohio/Revere) posted 14 digs and senior
Bella Costa (Newbury, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) contributed 13 digs.
Hart and Klusch joined Dorst on the All-Tournament Team.
Grove City finished the regular season as the fourth-place team in the conference's North Division. Hiram won the North Division with a 13-1 league record. That included a four-set home win September 16 over Grove City and a 3-2 win November at Grove City.
The NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced Monday.
