Wolverines roll on Senior Day, 59-14

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A balanced offensive attack and a defense that recorded four sacks and three interceptions helped lead the Grove City College football team to a 59-14 Senior Day victory Saturday afternoon over Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Grove City amassed 189 passing yards and 186 rushing yards while also finishing with 21 first downs. Senior quarterback Ethan Wiley (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) completed 14 of 26 passes for a career-high 189 yards and two touchdowns while senior running back Ian Demeri (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) ran for four touchdowns.

Senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) recorded two sacks to help lead the Grove City defensive effort, which held Saint Vincent to 173 total yards and 10 first downs.

Senior linebacker Caleb Brubaker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and freshman linebacker Nick Clemens (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) both had sacks. Senior safety Keagan Fraser (Butler, Pa./Knoch), senior cornerback Boden Davidson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian) and junior linebacker Brock Batche (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) all intercepted passes.

Clemens also set up a Grove City touchdown by blocking a punt that went out of bounds at the Saint Vincent 4.

Demeri gave Grove City a 7-0 lead with 3:32 left in the first quarter by scoring on a two-yard run. That capped a 12-play, 46-yard drive that used 6:22.

Saint Vincent (2-6, 1-5) tied the game with 13:26 remaining in the second quarter as Tristan Doy caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Jake Phillips. Grove City countered by scoring the final 17 points of the half, however.

Demeri slammed into the end zone from the 2 at the 7:21 mark while junior running back Chase Rankin (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) boosted the lead to 21-7 by scoring on a four-yard run with 32 seconds left in the half.

Fraser's interception and return to the Saint Vincent 15 set up a 32-yard field goal from freshman kicker Dylan Lane (Jefferson, Ga./Mill Creek) with two seconds left in the half.

The Wolverines then opened the second half with an eight-play, 69-yard touchdown drive that Wiley capped with a 27-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Seth McGroerty (Middletown, Del./Red Lion Christian) at the 10:44 mark of the third quarter.

Demeri's one-yard touchdown run at 6:29 of the third quarter extended the lead to 38-7. Following the Clemens punt block, Demeri scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 4:30 remaining in the third period.

In the fourth quarter, Wiley lofted a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Derrick Lambert (Denver, Pa./Garden Spot) with 11:28 remaining. Sophomore Devon Thomas (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) added the first of his two extra points.

Senior running back Eli Jones (Liberty Township, Ohio/Trenton Edgewood) closed Grove City's scoring by racing 22 yards to the end zone with 9:41 remaining.

Rankin led Grove City (6-2, 5-1) with 87 yards rushing. McGroerty caught four passes for 70 yards. Junior wide receiver Breck Peacock (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) had four receptions for 55 yards.

Sophomore linebackers Danny Franco (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) and Mason Clouse (Templeton, Pa./Redbank Valley) each had four tackles for Grove City.

Phillips completed 9 of 25 passes for 72 yards. Julian Walker ran for 41 yards on nine carries to pace Saint Vincent.

Winners of five straight games, Grove City will visit conference rival Case Western Reserve next Saturday at 1 p.m.
