Special teams, defense vault Grove City to 6th straight win

CLEVELAND -- The Grove City College special teams blocked two punts while the defense forced five turnovers Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines earned their sixth straight victory by doubling up host Case Western Reserve, 28-14, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at DiSanto Field.

Both blocked punts came in the second half. Sophomore safety Mason Clouse (Templeton, Pa./Redbank Valley) blocked a punt that senior linebacker Caleb Brubaker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) recovered at the 11. Two plays later, senior quarterback Ethan Wiley (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) lofted a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Daniel Sullivan (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) that gave Grove City (7-2, 6-1) a 14-7 lead with 7:09 left in the third quarter.

The lead swelled to 21-7 with 12:33 remaining in the game as freshman linebacker Nick Clemens (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) blocked a punt, then picked up the ball at the CWRU 10 and carried it into the end zone. That marked Grove City's fourth return touchdown of the season.

Case Western Reserve (4-4-1, 4-3) halved the lead with 9:37 left when Dylan Cave caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sam DeTillio. The Spartans then regained possession at their 45 after a short punt and drove to the Grove City 8. However, Grove City forced a turnover on downs with six minutes remaining.

Brubaker ended Case Western Reserve's next possession with 1:44 left by intercepting a pass at the Spartans' 36. On the next play, senior running back Ian Demeri (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) sealed the win with a 36-yard touchdown run, his 10th score of the season.

Senior cornerback Boden Davidson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian) ended a scoring threat in the third quarter with an interception in the end zone. Senior safety Keagan Fraser (Butler, Pa./Knoch) intercepted his team-leading sixth pass of the year while sophomore cornerback Noah Wheeler (McKinney, Texas/McKinney Christian) also intercepted a pass.

Senior safety Ryan Montgomery (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) set up Grove City's first touchdown by recovering a fumble at the Case Western Reserve 49 with 11:23 left in the first half.

Five plays after the fumble, Wiley fired a 26-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Seth McGroerty (Middletown, Del./Red Lion Christian) with 9:45 left in the half. Grove City led 7-0 at halftime.

Wiley completed 15 of 35 passes for 128 yards. McGroerty caught seven passes for 72 yards while Sullivan gained 34 yards on his five grabs. Junior running back Chase Rankin (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) ran for a game-high 83 yards on 25 carries. Demeri had 48 yards on six attempts.

Grove City limited Case Western Reserve to 71 rushing yards on 27 carries. The Wolverines also recorded four sacks. Brubaker had two sacks while Clemens and freshman nose tackle Kellan Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) both tallied sacks.

Brubaker led the defense with 15 tackles. Fellow senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) recorded nine stops.

DeTillio completed 18 of 41 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Cave had six catches for 76 yards. Case Western Reserve went 4 of 16 on third downs.

Grove City will conclude the 2025 regular season next week at conference foe Hiram. It will be the Wolverines first trip to Hiram since the 2002 season opener.
