Grove City outlasts Westminster, 14-7

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team earned its fourth straight victory by pulling out a 14-7 home win Saturday afternoon over longtime rival Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Robert E. Thorn Field.

The Grove City defense forced three turnovers, recorded three sacks and held Westminster to 57 rushing yards. The Titans entered the game as the conference's top rushing squad, averaging 181 yards per game.

The Wolverines (5-2, 4-1) broke a 7-7 tie with 6:49 left in the game as junior running back Chase Rankin (Coventry Township, Ohio/Coventry) bulled into the end zone on a seven-yard run. The touchdown drive began at the Westminster 18 after senior safety Keagan Fraser (Butler, Pa./Knoch) intercepted a pass at the 40 and returned the theft 22 yards.

Fraser also intercepted a pass at the Grove City 1 late in the first quarter. Sophomore cornerback Noah Wheeler (McKinney, Texas/McKinney Christian) sealed the win with 19 seconds left in the game by intercepting Westminster quarterback Quentin Goode at the Grove City 31.

Senior linebacker Caleb Brubaker (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and senior defensive end Jordan Karczewski (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) both recorded sacks for Grove City. Junior defensive end Dave Cowher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and freshman linebacker Nick Clemens (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) shared a sack.

The Clemens and Cowher sack caused Westminster to turn over the ball on downs with 12:40 remaining in the third quarter at the Grove City 38. Two plays later, senior quarterback Ethan Wiley (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) broke the scoreless tie by launching a 61-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Seth McGroerty (Middletown, Del./Red Lion Christian).

Westminster countered with a 75-yard scoring drive, capped by Goode's 14-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Grayson with 5:25 left in the third quarter.

Wiley came on in relief to start the second half and finished 4 of 9 for 81 yards. McGroerty had four catches for a game-high 84 yards. Rankin led the Wolverines with 49 yards on 21 carries.

Goode completed 18 of 38 passes for 196 yards. Westminster (4-3, 3-2) outgained Grove City, 253-141.

Brubaker and senior linebacker Jack Jollie (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) each had 13 tackles for Grove City. Senior safety Ryan Montgomery (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) had nine stops.

Grove City closes the home schedule next Saturday at 1 p.m. against conference foe Saint Vincent.
