GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team used a 9-0 run in the third quarter to vault past visiting Geneva, 60-49, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Wednesday night at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City trailed 28-25 at halftime but took the lead for good by scoring nine straight points over a five-minute span. The Wolverines trailed 33-30 but two free throws from junior center
Emma Ulmer (Milton, Pa./Northumberland Christian) ignited the rally. Junior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) buried back-to-back three-pointers to give Grove City the lead while a free throw from sophomore guard
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) capped the run.
Grove City led 44-37 after three quarters, then sealed the win with another 9-0 run in the fourth quarter. Hasley's third three-pointer of the half gave Grove City a 54-43 lead with 5:37 left. Senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) scored in the paint and Thompson followed with a layup. Senior guard
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) closed the run with a layup.
Hasley scored all of her game-high 13 points in the second half. Polczynski added 10 points and Thompson finished with a career-high nine points.
Grove City finished the game 22 of 67 (33 percent) from the field. Geneva (7-6, 4-4 PAC) went 17 of 71 (24 percent). Geneva missed its first 18 field goal attempts in the second quarter.
Each team finished with 51 rebounds. Junior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) grabbed a Grove City-high nine rebounds while Polczynski collected seven rebounds.
Hertzler recorded four assists. Polczynski also had four steals for Grove City (7-6, 5-3 PAC). Grove City forced 26 turnovers. The Wolverines turned over the ball 21 times.
Emily Garvin led Geneva with 12 points. Anna Ulmer,
Emma Ulmer's identical twin sister, added 11 points for Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes led 17-15 after one quarter.
Grove City will visit Bethany at 1 p.m. Saturday in conference play.
