BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit Saturday afternoon to earn a 65-55 victory over host Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Hummel Field House. Grove City (8-6, 6-3 PAC) outscored Bethany, 10-0, over the final three minutes of Saturday's win.
Grove City broke a 55-55 deadlock with two minutes left when junior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) scored in the paint after receiving a feed from senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin). Sherrerd split two free throws 45 seconds later, pushing the lead to 58-55.Â
Following a Grove City defensive stop, Bethany fouled senior forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) on an out-of-bounds play with 16 seconds left. Bethany had six players on the court at the start of play, however, resulting in a technical foul. Hannon went 4 for 4 at the foul line to help seal the victory.
Senior guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) followed with two free throws in the closing moments as Grove City outscored Bethany in the second half, 41-20.
Hannon scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the second half. Sophomore guard
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) posted a career-high 12 points while Davinsizer and Polczynski each added 10 points.Â
Bethany led 35-20 in the final minute of the first half but field goals from Hannon and junior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) cut the margin to 35-24 by halftime. Davinsizer's three-pointer and layup in the final minute of the third quarter helped Grove City pull to within 45-40 after 30 minutes.
Grove City converted 24 of 53 (45 percent) attempts from the field. The Wolverines made 7 of 11 (64 percent) field goal attempts in the fourth quarter. Bethany (7-7, 4-5 PAC) finished the game 21 of 54 (39 percent) on field goals. Grove City limited the Bison to 8-of-32 (25 percent) shooting in the second half.Â
Hannon's game-high nine rebounds helped Grove City earn a 35-30 edge on the glass. Polczynski collected eight rebounds. She also assisted four field goals and recorded three steals. Hannon added three assists.Â
Kaedlee Potter led Bethany with 13 points.Â
Grove City will visit Waynesburg at 5 p.m. Wednesday in conference play. That will mark the end of the first half of Grove City's 20-game conference schedule.Â
