Surging Wolverines down Thiel in 2025 opener

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened 2025 with a 69-48 victory Saturday at Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Thiel in conference action at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia. Grove City (9-3, 6-1) has now won eight of its last nine games overall.

Junior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) posted a game-high 17 points and game-high seven rebounds to help pace the visiting Wolverines while senior guard Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in 14 points. Junior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) added a dozen points on 4-of-6 accuracy from behind the three-point line. 

Grove City led wire-to-wire as the Wolverines scored the first seven points of the game. Senior forward Jaxon Weyforth (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) opened the scoring with a jumper while Christenson hit two free throws and a three-pointer to give Grove City a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game.

The Wolverines then broke open the game with a 15-2 run midway through the first half. Senior guard Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) sparked the outburst with a three-pointer while Randle and Yarberough also hit three-pointers during the run. Sophomore center Isaac Cherry (Sagamore HIlls, Ohio/Nordonia) scored twice in the paint and sophomore guard Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) added a tip-in. 

Grove City led 39-21 at halftime. A Randle three-pointer with five minutes left gave the Wolverines their largest lead of the afternoon, 69-40.

Grove City hit 11 of 22 three-point attempts in the win. Overall, the Wolverines shot 46 percent (25 of 54) from the field. The Wolverines limited Thiel to an 18-for-60 (30 percent) performance on field goals. 

Cherry and Yarberough both collected six rebounds to help Grove City own a 45-30 edge on the glass. Randle added three assists while Yarberough recorded two steals. Sophomore center Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) blocked a season-high four shots. 

Grove City turned over the ball 20 times while Thiel had 12 turnovers. Rob Thomas led Thiel (5-7, 4-4) with 12 points. 

The Wolverines will host conference rival Geneva at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
