Cold shooting foils Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 65-44 decision Wednesday night at Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. Grove City (11-8, 9-5) shot 26 percent (16 for 62) from the field for the game.

Senior guards Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) each tossed in nine points for Grove City while senior forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) added seven points.

Conference-leading W&J (16-3, 13-1) led 18-8 after one quarter and then extended the lead to 35-19 late in the second quarter. However, consecutive Davinsizer three-pointers and a jumper from junior center Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) cut the margin to 37-27 by halftime.

Sherrerd led Grove City with nine rebounds. W&J outrebounded the Wolverines, 56-36. The Presidents shot 23 of 64 (36 percent) from the field. Each team had 11 turnovers.

Polczynski and junior guard Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) each had three assists for Grove City.

Stellanie Loutsion and Katie Kovalchik each scored 13 points for W&J.

Grove City will host Chatham at 1 p.m. Saturday in conference play.
