STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – A 33-point first quarter Saturday afternoon helped vault the Grove City College women's basketball team to an 84-60 victory at Franciscan in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Finnegan Field House. It is Grove City's third straight win and raises the Wolverines' conference record to 9-4.
Senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) fired in 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter for the Wolverines (11-7).
Polczynski narrowly missed a triple-double as she also pulled in 10 rebounds and added eight steals.
Junior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) and junior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) both added 13 points.
Grove City never trailed Saturday. The Wolverines closed the first quarter on a 16-0 run over the final three minutes of the period.
Senior guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) sparked the run with a three-pointer while Sherrerd followed with two free throws. A three-point play from freshman guard
Kailey Devlin (Turbotville, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) extended the lead to 25-12. Polczynski's putback and consecutive three-pointers closed the quarter.
Franciscan (1-17, 1-12) cut Grove City's lead to 49-38 midway through the third quarter. However, the Wolverines answered with an 11-0 blitz to finish the quarter.
Sophomore guard
Sarah Pifer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) opened the run with a three-pointer. Senior forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), Devlin and Polczynski all followed with transition layups to give Grove City a 58-38 advantage.
Devlin's two free throws extended the lead to 60-38 after 30 minutes.
Sherrerd added eight rebounds for Grove City and Hasley collected seven rebounds. Grove City earned a 51-46 edge on the glass.
Grove City finished the game 32 of 78 (41 percent) from the field. Franciscan converted 20 of 68 (29 percent) field goal attempts.
Senior guard
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) highlighted her first career start by recording four assists. Hasley also assisted four field goals while Polczynski had three assists. Junior center
Emma Ulmer (Milton, Pa./Northumberland Christian) recorded three steals. Pifer finished with nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from behind the three-point line.
The Wolverines turned over the ball 21 times. Franciscan committed 28 turnovers. Maria McCallen led the Barons with 17 points.
Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson at 6 p.m. Wednesday in conference action.
