GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team used an 18-2 run in the fourth quarter Wednesday night to rally past visiting Westminster, 55-47, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City trailed 43-38 with eight minutes left before surging ahead. Consecutive jumpers from senior forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and junior center
Emma Ulmer (Milton, Pa./Northumberland Christian) ignited the run. Ulmer then gave Grove City a 44-43 lead by scoring in the paint with five minutes left.
Senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) added a pair of layups in the run while classmate
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored in transition as Grove City seized a 50-43 lead.
Another Ulmer field goal and free throws from both Hannon and Ulmer closed the outburst.
Ulmer led Grove City's balanced offensive attack with 10 points. Polczynski, senior guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomore guard
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) all added seven points.
Grove City trailed 27-21 at halftime and then twice trailed by eight points in the third quarter. The Wolverines trimmed the lead to 39-36 by the end of the third quarter.
Grove City (10-7, 8-4) finished the game 24 of 77 (31 percent) from the field. The Wolverines hit 8 of 17 (47 percent) field goal attempts in the second half. Westminster finished 18 of 52 (35 percent). Westminster went 1 for 17 on three-point attempts while Grove City made 3 of 28 shots from behind the three-point line.
Hannon and Ulmer both collected seven rebounds. Each team had 47 rebounds. Westminster committed 23 turnovers, however, while Grove City had 11 turnovers.
Polczynski recorded five assists and four steals. Hannon assisted three field goals.
Maddie Syka led Westminster (2-15, 2-10) with 17 points. Westminster led 14-11 after one quarter.
Grove City begins a two-game road trip Saturday at Franciscan. The game will tip off at 1 p.m. in Steubenville.
