GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped to 9-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference as visiting Saint Vincent (12-4, 8-3) pulled out an 80-78 overtime win over the Wolverines in the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City forced a turnover with 2.4 seconds remaining and took possession in its backcourt. However, after a court-length pass, the Wolverines could not force a second overtime as an off-balance attempt missed.
Senior guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) sent the game to overtime as he made two free throws with 0.4 seconds left in regulation, tying the game at 71. Yarbeough led Grove City (12-4) with a game-high 20 points.
Junior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) posted 15 points while sophomore center
Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) recorded a 12-point, 18-rebound double-double. The 18 rebounds are a career-high for Cherry.
Grove City led 36-34 at halftime but Saint Vincent opened the second half with a 14-2 run. Back-to-back Yarberough layups helped ignite Grove City's comeback, however. Three-pointers by Christenson and senior guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) cut the lead to 59-57 while Yarberough forged a 59-59 tie with a layup at the 5:16 mark.
Junior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) gave Grove City the lead with a layup on the Wolverines' next possession. The teams then traded the lead seven more times over the final four minutes of regulation.
Overall, the game featured 16 ties and 17 lead changes.
Grove City converted 30 of 66 (46 percent) field goal attempts. Saint Vincent also shot 46 percent for the game as the Bearcats hit 32 of 69 attempts from the floor.
Grove City outrebounded Saint Vincent, 47-37. Yarberough added eight rebounds.
Senior forward
John Ward (Indian Land, S.C./Covenant Day, N.C.) recorded a team-high three assists. Cherry blocked four shots. Grove City had 14 turnovers. Saint Vincent had nine turnovers.
Saint Vincent's Dev Ostrowski scored seven of his team-high 18 points in overtime. Terek Crosby also had 18 points for Saint Vincent.
The Wolverines will host Westminster at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in conference play.
