Christenson's career night helps Grove City to win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) fired in a career-high 35 points Wednesday night to help the Grove City College men's basketball team slip past visiting Westminster, 65-62, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Christenson went 10 of 18 from the field, including a 6-of-8 effort on three-pointers. The 35 points are the most for a Grove City player since James Wells scored 35 in an 84-76 win November 17, 2018 over King's in Selinsgrove, Pa.

Westminster took a 56-55 lead with 2:11 left on two Mick Hergenrother free throws. Grove City quickly reclaimed the lead, however, as Christenson buried a three-pointer. Christenson then recorded a steal and his subsequent layup gave Grove City a 60-56 lead with 1:07 remaining.

Christenson help sew up the win by hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the final 15 seconds.

A 10-0 run in the first half gave Grove City (13-4, 10-2) a 17-9 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Christenson and senior guard Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) each scored five points during the spurt.

Westminster forged a 28-28 tie in the final minute of the half, but a Christenson three-pointer and a short jumper by junior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) prior to the horn gave the Wolverines a 33-28 halftime lead.

Sophomore center Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) pulled in nine rebounds to help Grove City earn a 47-34 edge on the glass. Christenson collected eight boards while Yarberough and senior center Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) each had six rebounds.

Grove City shot 22 of 61 (36 percent) from the field for the game. Westminster finished 24 of 59 (41 percent).

Randle recorded three assists. Christenson had three steals. Grove City committed 17 turnovers while Westminster had a dozen turnovers.

Drew Weir led Westminster (4-12, 1-10) with 18 points. The game featured 15 ties and 16 lead changes.
