WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the first half of its 20-game Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday night with a 70-61 road setback to Waynesburg at the Yellow Jackets' Rudy Marisa Field House.
Waynesburg outscored Grove City, 11-2, over the final 90 seconds of the game. Senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) pulled Grove City into a 59-59 tie with 1:45 left by hitting two free throws. However, Waynesburg's Clara-Paige Miller recorded a three-point play on the subsequent possession to help the Jackets reclaim the lead.
Waynesburg went 8 for 8 at the foul line in the final minute to help seal the win.
Junior center
Emma Ulmer (Milton, Pa./Northumberland Christian) led Grove City with eight points. Polczynski, sophomore guard
Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) and sophomore guard
Bethany Thompson all tossed in seven points.
Grove City shot 21 of 71 (30 percent) from the field for the game. Waynesburg finished 21 of 57 (37 percent). Waynesburg out-rebounded the Wolverines, 50-44. Polczynski led Grove City with six rebounds.
The game featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, including a 19-19 deadlock after one quarter and a 31-31 stalemate at halftime. McDole's late three-pointer gave Grove City a 46-44 lead after 30 minutes.
Waynesburg had 20 turnovers while Grove City committed 15 turnovers. Tori Wesolowski led Waynesburg (8-7, 3-7) with 12 points.
Grove City (8-7, 6-4) will host Saint Vincent at 1 p.m. Saturday.
