WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team never trailed Wednesday night on the way to a 67-55 win at Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Rudy Marisa Field House.
Senior guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in a game-high 23 points for Grove City (12-3, 9-1), which won its seventh straight outing. Junior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) poured in 16 points and junior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) added 11 in the victory.
Defensively, Grove City held Waynesburg (6-9, 4-6) to 37 percent (22 of 60) shooting from the field. Grove City also captured a 47-30 rebound edge.
The Wolverines broke open the game in the first half with a 10-2 run. Randle ignited the run with a transition basket while Yarberough followed with two free throws that gave Grove City a 26-16 lead. Christenson scored in the pain before sophomore guard
Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) converted a pair of foul shots.
Sophomore center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) capped the spurt with a dunk, which gave Grove City a 32-18 lead. The Wolverines led 33-24 at halftime.
Waynesburg cut the margin to 33-27 early in the second half. However, Christenson scored seven straight points and Collins followed with consecutive field goals to give the Wolverines a 44-31 lead with 15 minutes left. Back-to-back Yarberough three-pointers pushed the lead to 50-35 midway through the period.
Christenson and Yarberough both collected seven rebounds for Grove City. Johncour and Randle each had six boards. Randle also had three assists.
Grove City shot 22 of 55 (40 percent) from the field. The Wolverines had 19 turnovers while Waynesburg committed nine turnovers.
Antone Baker led Waynesburg with 18 points.
Grove City begins the second half of the 20-game conference schedule Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Wolverines host Saint Vincent (11-4, 7-3) in the Grove City College Arena.
