Cherry flavored victory

BETHANY, W.Va. -- Sophomore center Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) poured in a career-high 31 points while three Grove City College guards also scored in double figures Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines rallied for a 98-87 win at Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Hummel Field House.

Cherry went 14 of 18 from the field Saturday while also pulling down 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Meanwhile, junior Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) fired in 17 points, senior Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) posted 15 points and senior Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) contributed 13 points for the Wolverines, who have won 10 of their last 11 outings.

Grove City (11-3, 8-1 PAC) trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and faced a 49-41 deficit at halftime. A 7-0 run in the second half gave Grove City its first lead of the game, 61-60, with 13:38 remaining. Sophomore guard Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) drilled a three-pointer, Bock bucketed a layup and senior forward John Ward (Indian Land, S.C./Covenant Day, N.C.) drained two free throws.

The Wolverines then took the lead for good with 10 minutes left when Collins' second three-pointer of the half put Grove City up 66-65. Yarberough, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, followed with a three-pointer.

Grove City drained 8 of 13 (62 percent) three-point attempts in the second half. The Wolverines shot 21 of 40 (52 percent) from the field over the final 20 minutes. Overall, Grove City shot 39 of 81 (48 percent) for the game.

Yarberough added seven rebounds and Ward recorded six rebounds to help Grove City secure a 46-36 advantage on the glass.

Randle chalked up five assists while Cherry and Yarberough each assisted three field goals. Yarberough also had four steals. Grove City finished the game with 14 turnovers while Bethany (5-8, 0-8) committed 18 turnovers.

Troy Hixson led Bethany with 21 points. Bethany shot 31 of 69 (45 percent) from the field. Grove City held the Bison to a 12-for-31 (39 percent) shooting performance in the second half.

Cherry is the first Grove City player to score 30 or more points in a game since February 13, 2019, when James Wells scored 30 in an 87-82 overtime win over Westminster. It is the first 30-point outing in a regulation game for a Grove City player since Wells scored 35 points November 17, 2018 against King's.

Bock has 203 career three-point goals. Shawn Carr owns the program record, having made 207 three-pointers from 2004 to 2008. Yarberough moved into 27th place on Grove City's career scoring list as he now has 1,054 career points. Ron Arrington (1962-66) and Ryan Eller (2001-05) are tied for 25th with 1,068 points.
