Wolverines charge past Allegheny, 5-3

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team charged out to a 4-0 lead on the way to a 5-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. The five goals are a season-high for the Wolverines (5-3-1, 2-0 PAC).

Senior forward Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) scored twice while senior forward Natalie Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian), junior midfielder Natalie Giunta (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and junior midfielder Maddie Sheek (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) all added goals.

Herrmann opened the scoring at 20:29 by registering her eighth goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) assisted Herrmann's first goal.

An unassisted Herrmann goal with 1:29 left in the first half gave Grove City a 2-0 halftime lead. Merrick pushed the lead to 3-0 2:25 into the second half as she registered her second goal of 2024. Herrmann assisted Merrick's goal.

Giunta recorded the game-winner at 54:04. Allegheny's Madeline Schneider scored at 79:57 to break up the shutout but Sheek's first collegiate goal sealed the victory. Sheek scored at 84:56 after receiving a feed from junior midfielder Anna Williams (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington).

Allegheny's Emma Miller and Katherine Surdykowski scored in the final 3:30, closing out the match scoring.

Grove City posted 27 shots overall, including 16 on goal. The Wolverines held a 27-16 edge in total shots and a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal. Allegheny had six corner kicks while Grove City had five corners.

Senior goalie Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) did not allow a goal in 60:26 of action. She made two saves. Sophomore Maddie Mills (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) played the final 29:34 in goal.

The Wolverines will host Geneva at 4;30 p.m. Wednesday in conference play at Don Lyle Field.
