Wolverines blank Bethany, 2-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior forward Natalie Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) and junior midfielder Natalie Giunta (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) each scored their first goal of the 2024 season Wednesday night to help lift the Grove City College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Don Lyle Field.

Grove City (4-3-1, 1-0 PAC) broke the scoreless tie 3:39 into the second half as Merrick headed in a corner kick from freshman midfielder Marina Hahn (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). Hahn notched her second assist of the season, moving her into a tie for the team lead.

The Wolverines doubled the lead nine minutes later when Giunta launched a free kick from the center circle, just past midfield. The blast landed in the goal area, bounced over Bethany goalkeeper Mathelyn Ruiz and into the upper right corner of the net.

Grove City peppered Ruiz with 13 shots on goal. The Wolverines finished with a 25-3 edge in total shots, along with a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) and sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Mills (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) combined for the shutout win. Lisman made two saves in 78 minutes of action. Mills played the final 12 minutes of the match.

Hahn pulled into a tie with senior forward Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) and senior midfielder Lexi Zook (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) for the team lead in assists. Herrmann, Merrick, Zook and sophomore midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) have Grove City's four game-winning goals this season.

The Wolverines will visit conference foe Allegheny at 4 p.m. Saturday.
