GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Freshman pitcher
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) fired a complete game in Game One while classmates
Ross Morrow (McKean, Pa./General McLane) and
Micheal Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) combined for a three-hitter in the nightcap Tuesday afternoon as the Grove City College baseball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Geneva at Jack Behringer Field.
Grove City earned a 5-3 win in the opener, then rolled to a 12-2, eight-inning victory in the nightcap.
Bevin (4-2) struck out nine men in his nine innings while allowing only five hits. It is Bevin's third complete game of 2024.
Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in second inning of the opener. Junior catcher
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) singled in sophomore third baseman
Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) to open the scoring. DiStefano then scored the second run when freshman left fielder
Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) singled to center field.
Lavrich's sacrifice fly in the third inning brought home sophomore center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). In the fourth inning, DiStefano scored on a single from senior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian).
Geneva cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning but Grove City added an insurance run in the seventh as junior shortstop
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) raced home on a single by senior second baseman
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford).
Baccari also doubled and finished 2 for 4. DiStefano and Vittone also went 2 for 4 while Williams added two hits in five at-bats.
Morrow (1-0) made his collegiate debut Tuesday and allowed only three hits in his five innings. He struck out four men and did not walk a batter. Earman closed out the win with three hitless innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk while earning his first collegiate save.
Bevin homered and doubled while Holland went 3 for 5 to help pace Grove City's 14-hit attack. Lavrich went 2 for 4. Bevin, Holland and Vittone all scored a pair of runs.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game Two as Bevin doubled and scored on a single by junior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) to open the scoring. Holland scored on a force play and Williams later scored on Vittone's sacrifice fly.
Grove City reclaimed a three-run lead, 5-2, in the sixth when Holland singled in freshman pinch runner
David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's). An error on the play allowed junior catcher
Aaron Gault (Youngstown, Ohio/Heartland Christian) to come home.
The Wolverines broke open the game with a six-run outburst in the seventh inning. Lavrich singled in Vittone while Gault squeezed home sophomore pinch runner
Raymond Stierer (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian). Bevin then belted a two-run homer, his second clout in the last three games, to give Grove City a 9-2 lead.
Later in the inning, Holland scored on an error and Williams drove in Minnich with a single. Vittone scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, invoking the 10-run mercy rule that is used in conference twinbills.
Grove City (13-9, 4-2 PAC) will visit Bethany at 1 p.m. Saturday for a conference doubleheader.
