Wolverines sweep Bethany

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday afternoon from Bethany at Washington & Jefferson College's Ross Memorial Park. Grove City earned an 8-3 victory in Game One, then rolled to a 16-2, seven-inning win in the nightcap.

Grove City took command of the opener by scoring six times in the top of the fifth inning. Grove City (15-9, 6-2) broke a 1-1 tie when freshman pitcher Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) drove in sophomore third baseman Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) with a bases-loaded hit batsman.

Freshman left fielder Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) pushed the lead to 3-1 when his infield single scored senior second baseman Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford).

Junior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) followed with a single that brought home junior catcher Aaron Gault (Youngstown, Ohio/Heartland Christian).

An error allowed Bevin and Holland to also score. Minnich scored the sixth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian).

Williams opened the scoring for the Wolverines with a solo home run in the second inning. He finished 2 for 3. Grove City had eight hits in the opener.

Holland's groundout scored Bevin in the seventh inning, capping Grove City's scoring.

Bevin (5-2) earned the pitching win by striking out seven men in seven innings. He allowed one run and three hits. Junior Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) pitched two innings of relief to close out the win.

Fourteen walks and six Bethany errors helped fuel Grove City in Game Two. Holland went 3 for 5 with four runs batted in to pace Grove City's nine-hit attack. Freshman third baseman Treyton Sarvis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) went 2 for 3 while junior shortstop Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled and singled in four at-bats.

Junior catcher Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) scored a career-high four runs while Bevin scored three times. Bevin walked four times.

Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning as DiStefano scored on a Williams groundout. Sarvis, Holland and Minnich all had run-scoring singles in Grove City's five-run fourth inning. Bevin walked with the bases loaded and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Wolverines added five more runs in the fifth inning. Bevin and Williams both walked with the bases loaded while sophomore center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) cracked a two-run single.

Holland laced a two-run single in the sixth inning. Freshman DH David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) walked with the bases loaded in the seventh, forcing in sophomore first baseman Cooper Babcock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Discovery Canyon).

Sophomore outfielder Trey Wagner (Mars, Pa./Mars) scored on a fielder's choice and Sarvis later crossed home on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.

Freshman pitcher Micheal Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) earned his first collegiate win by pitching 3 2/3 innings. He allowed one earned run. Senior Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Junior David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) pitched the final two innings and struck out six men.

Winners of five straight, Grove City will host Saint Vincent at 1 p.m. Wednesday in a conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field.
