MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned a split of its Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Allegheny. Grove City dropped Game One by a 9-4 score but rebounded for an 8-0 victory in the nightcap at Garbark Field.
Junior pitcher
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) and freshman
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) combined for a five-hit shutout in Game Two. Umland (3-2) fired seven scoreless innings to earn the victory. He struck out five and walked one. Bevin struck out two men in his two hitless innings.
The Wolverines (11-9, 2-2 PAC) broke through in the fourth inning when sophomore center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) cracked a two-run single that scored junior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman left fielder
Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge).
The lead grew to 3-0 when senior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) scored on a double play.
The Wolverines broke open the game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Minnich and Williams both came home on a two-run double from junior shortstop
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian). Freshman DH
Treyton Sarvis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) then laced a two-run that scored Sampson and Vittone.
Bevin scored on an error in the ninth inning to close the scoring. Holland went 3 for 4 with a double to help lead Grove City's 10-hit attack. Sarvis finished 2 for 4 while Williams went 2 for 5.
Bevin led off the opener with a home run that gave the Wolverines an early lead. Allegheny (12-7, 4-2 PAC) led 3-1 after six innings but Grove City rallied to reclaim the lead in the top of the seventh inning.
Junior catcher
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) tied the game by singling in Holland and senior second baseman
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford). DiStefano later scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error. However, Allegheny scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Grove City bullpen and then added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning.
Senior starting pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) struck out nine men in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs. Junior
David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) struck out four men in 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Freshmen
David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour),
Clay Dean (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) and
Micheal Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) followed in relief, with Gallagher taking the defeat.
Holland went 2 for 4 while Sampson doubled in Game One.
Grove City will host Geneva in a conference doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m.
