W&J nips Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team closed the 2024 regular season Saturday afternoon with an 11-9 setback at Washington & Jefferson (10-6, 9-0 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Alexandre Stadium. 

Grove City (12-5, 7-2 PAC) will be the No. 3 seed in next week's six-team conference tournament. W&J clinched the top seed in the tournament with its win. 

Freshman attack Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) matched a season high by scoring five goals while senior attack Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and senior midfielder Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) both added a pair of goals. 

Martin also assisted three goals. Blythe and freshman attack Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) each recorded two assists while Nazigian also had an assist. 

Martin scored with 9:31 left in the first half to give Grove City a 4-3 lead but W&J rallied to take a 6-4 lead by halftime. The lead grew to 7-4 in the third quarter but successive goals by Martin and Nazigian reduced the lead to one goal with 12:27 left in the third quarter. W&J led 11-8 after 45 minutes. Blythe scored on a Shilling assist with 43 seconds left to close out the scoring. 

Junior defender Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led Grove City with three caused turnovers. Freshman midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) caused two turnovers. Wartman also led Grove City with four ground balls and Stevenson secured three ground balls. Nazigian won four draw controls. 

Junior goalie Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) stopped a season-high 12 shots. W&J out-shot Grove City, 28-25. The Presidents had 20 turnovers while Grove City had 18 turnovers. 

Grove City will host No. 6 Westminster in Tuesday's conference tournament quarterfinals at Don Lyle Field. The winner will visit No. 2 Allegheny in the semifinals Thursday.
