Road split for Grove City

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Thiel. Grove City dropped the opener, 7-1, but rebounded for a 17-0 victory in the nightcap at Tomcat Park.

Three Grove City pitchers combined on a one-ht shutout in Game Two. Junior David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) allowed one single in five innings. He struck out four men and earned the win. Freshmen Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) and David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) each tossed one hitless inning. The game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule in conference doubleheaders.

Offensively, Grove City pounded out 18 hits in the nightcap, including seven extra-base hits. Junior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tripled, doubled and singled as part of a 3-for-4 outing. Sophomore center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) also went 3 for 4 with a double.

Freshman DH Micheal Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) doubled and singled while senior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian), junior shortstop Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) and sophomore outfielder Trey Wagner (Mars, Pa./Mars) all added doubles.

Sophomore third baseman Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) went 2 for 4 while freshman left fielder Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) and freshman second baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) each added two hits. Junior catcher Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) scored a pair of runs.

Grove City (16-10, 7-3 PAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Minnich singled in Bevin while Vittone's double brought home Holland. Sampson singled in Minnich to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead. Earman's two-run double scored Sampson and Vittone.

After scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings, Grove City broke open the game with a seven-run fifth inning. Williams highlighted the inning with a two-run double while Bevin, Earman, Holland, Minnich and Sampson all had run-scoring hits in the inning.

Minnich and Holland had run-scoring groundouts in the sixth. Lavrich drove in sophomore infielder Raymond Stierer (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) with an infield hit in the seventh inning.

Williams and Vittone both went 2 for 4 in Game One. Williams scored in the seventh inning on a groundout by freshman DH Treyton Sarvis (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg).

Junior pitcher Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight men but took the defeat. Senior Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland), freshman Ross Morrow (McKean, Pa./General McLane) and junior Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) all pitched in relief.
