Oswego State outlasts Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team opened its 2024 home schedule Saturday with a 16-11 setback against Oswego State in non-conference action at rain-soaked Don Lyle Field. 

Oswego State (3-2) scored the final two goals of the first half to secure a 7-5 halftime lead. The Lakers then scored five times in the first eight minutes of the third quarter to grab a 12-6 advantage. 

Senior midfielder Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) fired in five goals for Grove City (3-2) while freshman attack Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) posted three goals and three assists. Senior attack Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) recorded a goal and an assist while freshman midfielder Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) and freshman attack Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) also scored. 

Sophomore attack Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) tallied a career-high three assists.

Grove City trailed 5-1 in the second quarter but rallied to forge a 5-5 tie. Stevenson and Nazigian both scored in a two-minute span to cut the lead in half. Blythe assisted both goals. She then scored a power play goal at 8:07, trimming the lead to 5-4. Nazigian tied the game with an unassisted goal at the 6:27 mark.

Junior defender Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led Grove City with five ground balls while fellow junior defender Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) scooped up four ground balls. Wartman also had five draw controls. Wartman and junior goalie Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) both caused two turnovers. 

Grove City had 20 turnovers while Oswego State turned over the ball 17 times. Oswego State held a 28-27 edge in total shots and a 22-20 advantage in shots on goal. Kiggins stopped six shots. 

The Wolverines will visit Fredonia State at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in non-conference play. That game starts a four-game road trip for Grove City.
