FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Freshmen
Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima),
Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) combined for 11 goals Tuesday afternoon to help lead the Grove City College women's lacrosse team to a 16-9 non-conference win at Fredonia State.
Blythe and Shilling both fired in four goals while Stevenson scored three times. Senior midfielder
Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) also scored three goals while senior attack
Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and junior midfielder
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) each registered goals.
Grove City bolted to a 7-2 lead as Blythe, Nazigian and Stevenson all scored twice in the first quarter. Shilling added two goals and an assist in the second quarter to help the Wolverines extend the lead to 10-3.
Fredonia State (3-2) trimmed the lead to 10-6 by halftime but the Wolverines blanked Fredonia State in the third quarter. Blythe, Nazigian and Stevenson all scored in the period.
Blythe also recorded three assists for the Wolverines (4-2). Roetering and Shilling each assisted two goals. Martin, Stevenson and junior attack
Meah Groves (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) all added assists.
Nazigian tallied eight draw controls while junior defender
Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) netted four draw controls. Junior defender
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and junior goalie
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) both caused three turnovers. Roetering, Shilling and junior defender
Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) all had two caused turnovers.
Overall, Grove City harassed Fredonia State into 21 turnovers. Grove City committed 16 turnovers. Kiggins, Roetering and Wartman all collected three ground balls.
Grove City outshot Fredonia State, 33-29. Kiggins earned the win by making 10 saves in her 45 minutes of play. Sophomore
Mia Gallagher (Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) stopped three shots in the fourth quarter.
Blythe now leads Grove City with 12 assists and 32 points. Her 20 goals rank second, trailing Nazigian's 22 goals. Martin has added 18 goals and 11 assists through the first six games of 2024.
Tuesday's win opened a four-game road trip for the Wolverines. Grove City visits Buffalo State in non-conference play Saturday at 12 p.m.
